Our story, in short

Fourteen years,
two bedsheets.

We met at a toga party — a promising start for anyone draped in a bedsheet — and had our first date in the Pavilion at Trinity, over a drink on the cricket square.

We became best friends almost immediately, moved in together a short 6-ish years later, somehow becoming proper adults along the way. Fourteen years in, Simon finally took the plunge with a proposal at Adare Manor — sealed, for the record, with a Haribo ring as a placeholder (the real one arrived shortly after; the sweet one did not survive the celebrations).

14 years later, we're still taking our time and it's worked out pretty well so far! :)

The Venue

Gloster House.

A 300-year-old Georgian-Palladian house on 140 acres of woodland, lakes and Italianate gardens — halfway between Birr and Roscrea.

Painstakingly restored over twenty years by Tom and Mary Alexander, Gloster is the kind of place that asks you to slow down. There's a double-height entrance hall, a white chapel, a folly arch in the trees, and late August light coming through original glass. We fell for it the moment we saw it. You will too.

We have the run of the estate from the day before to the day after — so there's no rush, and plenty to wander into.

Getting There

In the middle
of the country.

Gloster is roughly equidistant from Dublin, Cork and Galway. There's plenty of on-site parking, and we'll be organising a shuttle on the day from specific hotels (referenced below).

By car

  • Dublin via M7 1h 45m
  • Cork via N20 / M8 2h 00m
  • Galway via N65 1h 30m
  • Limerick via N7 1h 10m

Ample on-site parking at the estate. Cars can be left overnight.

Eircode R42 CH02 ↗

By rail & bus

  • Roscrea station by taxi 15 mins
  • Birr (bus) by taxi 20 mins

Public transport to the venue itself is limited — if you're coming by train we'd suggest sharing a taxi from the station.

Taxis nearby

  • Birr Cabs +353 57 000 0000
  • Roscrea Taxis +353 50 000 0000
  • Midlands Cars +353 57 000 0000

Numbers to be confirmed — final list shared closer to the day.

Where to stay

A bed for
the night.

No one or two places has room for everyone, so guests stay spread across Birr, Roscrea, and the houses in between. We'd suggest contacting a few of the providers below to block-reserve rooms for your group — and please stick to this list: our evening shuttle only runs to Birr, Roscrea, and the stretch between them, and taxis elsewhere aren't guaranteed.

A handful of houses and B&Bs sit right beside the estate, in neither Birr nor Roscrea. Lovely and close — but please note the evening shuttle buses only run to and from Birr and Roscrea (and the stretch between them), so taxis back to these are not guaranteed.

The handsome 18th-century town of Birr has the most accommodation, and the shuttle serves it. The County Arms and Dooley's host their own weddings most weekends, so they'll only release a few rooms — book early, and spread across a few of the places below.

The medieval town of Roscrea is a little further out and served by the shuttle. Best once the spots closer to Gloster and Birr have filled up.

Make a weekend of it

If you've come
this far…

We have the estate from Friday to Sunday, but the surrounding country is worth a longer trip. A few favourites within thirty minutes:

Castle

Birr Castle & Gardens

The Leviathan telescope, walled gardens, and the most enormous box hedges in Ireland. 15 minutes.

Walking

Slieve Bloom Way

Quiet, ancient, mossy hills. Half-day loops from Cadamstown or Kinnitty. 25 minutes.

Water

Shannon & Grand Canal

Hire a barge for an afternoon, or just have a wander along the towpath at Shannonbridge.

Town

Birr itself

Georgian Birr is good for a slow morning — coffee at Spinners, books at Emma's, lunch in Emmet Square.
